Pegunungan Dieng - Wonosobo


Dieng is a region in the highlands on the border between the District and County Banjarnegara Wonosobo, Central Java. Villages are divided into Dieng Dieng Kulon, District of Batur, Banjarnegara and Dieng Kidul District, District Kejajar, Wonosobo.Kawasan District is located approximately 26 km north of Wonosobo regency's capital, with a height of 6,000 feet or 2093 m above sea level. Dieng name comes from the ancient Sundanese "On" meaning "place" or "mountain" and "Hyang" which means (God). Thus, Dieng mean mountain areas where the gods and goddesses residing. The name comes from the Sundanese Dieng as expected before the year 600 the area inhabited by the Sundanese and Javanese instead. (Source: wikipedia).

The temples in Dieng believed to be an early sign of Hindu civilization on the island of Java at the time of Sanjaya in the 8th century. This is indicated by a cluster of temples in Dieng who is said to worship the god Shiva. The temples are: Arjuna Temple, Temple Heroine, Puntadewa Temple, Temple Sembadra, Candi Gatot Kaca. As for naming the temples themselves believed started in the 19th century. This is indicated by the existing reliefs on the temple. The temples are built using construction aggregates from Mount Pakuwaja in South Dieng temple complex.
